Supplies you'll need in case of emergencyTaking a few simple steps now can help you protect yourself and your family from the effects of thunderstorms, lightning, tornadoes, floods and similar extreme weather events, say the experts at the Us centers for disease control and prevention.

They advise you to have on hand a battery-operated flashlight, a battery-operated weather radio and extra batteries for both.  They also suggest you keep list of important personal information, including telephone numbers of neighbors, family and friends, insurance and property information, telephone numbers of utility companies and medical information including prescriptions.

You should have a first aid kit including any prescription medication, hydrogen peroxide, antibiotic ointment and bandages.  You may also need a three to five day supply of bottled water and non perishable food and blankets or sleeping bags.  Make sure your family knows where to seek appropriate shelter, where to meet if you get separated, where the emergency supplies are and how to turn off the water, gas and electricity.
